February 26, 2024 – Mississauga, ON – A decade ago, Trillium Health Partners (THP) launched its research and innovation institute – the Institute for Better Health (IBH). The establishment of IBH was an important part of fulfilling THP’s mission of creating a new kind of health care for a healthier community.

Over the past decade, IBH has focused on building Canada’s premier institute leading in learning health systems research and innovation. It has grown from a small team with a bold vision to solve health care problems stretching from the bedside to the system, embedded in the hospital and broader community, to a multidisciplinary team of more than 150 people focused on addressing the most pressing challenges to shape a healthier tomorrow.

“We identified a need to build a research and innovation system that would complement the strength of Canada’s basic science and translational research and discovery capabilities,” says Simone Harrington, Vice President of IBH and THP Solutions. “Ten years later, we better understand what a learning health system truly means – how we can deeply embed scientific expertise and innovative thinking alongside health services providers, enabling experts, patients, families, caregivers and community members to bring novel solutions to the frontline of care.”

Since 2014, IBH has attracted world-renowned scientists, innovators and thought leaders and brought them together in a collaborative environment with a unified mission. High-quality support services like research ethics, finance and operations, data analytics and knowledge translation have integrated research and innovation throughout THP and our community to produce health system solutions. IBH is also advancing health equity and population health through a shared commitment to dismantling all forms of systemic racism by creating health care solutions that meet the needs of the diverse community we serve.

IBH has achieved numerous milestones, many through the generous support of donors. Below are a few highlights:

  • Recognition as one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals (2022, 2023).
  • Built a strategic alliance with the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, which included the establishment of four research chairs in partnership with the THP Foundation.
  • More than $25 million in philanthropic funding.
  • Has grown to more than $12 million in research and innovation funding.
  • Launched the Medical Psychiatry Alliance – an unprecedented $60 million collaborative partnership between the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Hospital for Sick Children, Trillium Health Partners and the University of Toronto – to address the pressing issue of patients suffering from combined medical and psychiatric illnesses.
  • Establishment of the Hazel McCallion Annual Lecture in Shaping Healthier Communities in 2018.
  • Creation of the Family and Child Health Initiative (FCHI), a group of researchers and clinicians focused on improving the health and well-being of children, youth, and families in Peel Region in 2018.
  • Creation of the AI Deployment and Evaluation Lab (AIDE Lab) to test and evaluate artificial intelligence and machine learning models at THP in 2021.
  • Built a real-time open source COVID-19 collaborative data and analytics hub in Ontario (HowsMyFlattening.ca).
  • Launch of Mississauga Health SCOPE (Seamless Care Optimizing the Patient Experience) in 2023.
  • Creation of the Learning Health System Framework in collaboration with the Ontario Strategy for Patient Oriented Research Support Unit (OSSU).

“As we celebrate IBH’s 10th anniversary, we reflect on its remarkable growth and the profound impact it has had on the THP community and beyond,” says Dr. Robert Reid, Chief Scientist and Senior Vice President, Science, IBH. “We are incredibly proud of the collaborative spirit and dedication of our team and partners who are committed to shaping a healthier future for all through on-the-ground innovation and research.”

We are optimistic about the future of health care through IBH’s ability to generate high-powered research, innovation and partnerships that are embedded in THP’s goal of a healthier, more equitable community. “IBH is a force of change,” says Karli Farrow, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners. “It empowers us at THP to collaborate, think differently, innovate and develop solutions that will impact how we care for our patients and the people in our community.”

Join us in celebrating 10 years of thinking differently, championing change and shaping a healthier tomorrow.
